Since the beginning of the business in 2019, co-owner Darren W. Carter has spent countless hours honing his love for the craft of BBQ. As a child he saw his father working the grill and the joy it brought people at the holiday cookouts. It was wanting to be like his dad on the grill which led to his journey to BBQ.
In his words, he has burned a lot of meat to get where he is today, but his passion has continued to grow, and he honors the craft by giving customers the best smoked meats he can produce. He has been mentored by James Beard award winner, Kevin Bludso, among others in the BBQ community. He has also attended and completed a BBQ class with famed pitmaster Myron Mixon.
Carter’s BBQ was chosen among six in 2023 as a Fellow for the Kingsford “Preserve the Pit” national program. The program aims to redirect the spotlight on the people and stories in the black community that have made barbecue what it is today.
Carter’s BBQ has also been featured in Cleveland’s Crains Business, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, other local publications, and on Fox 8’s New Day Cleveland morning show.
Continuing in his passion for BBQ, Darren started a podcast called “The Unknowns Black Pitmasters” where he highlights black BBQ enthusiasts and pitmasters across America. The podcast focuses on the journeys of modern-day BBQ cooks from the backyard to TV personalities and everyone in between.
In the end, Carter’s BBQ strives to bring you the best BBQ prepared with the love of what they do!
His wife and co-owner, Theresa Carter, believes in cooking with love! Her love for family and her memories of cooking with her mom are her motivation as she aims to bring the best comfort food to the table.
